The Oil and Gas Recovery for Indonesia (OGRINDO) research consortium was founded on May 6, 2004, by the Petroleum Engineering Study Program within the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering (FTTM) at the Institute of Technology Bandung, formerly known as the Department of Petroleum Engineering-FIKTM. This initiative was driven by the university's research requirements and funding opportunities, aligning with the pressing needs of Indonesia's oil and gas sectors for rapid and effective solutions to field-related challenges. As global trends shift towards energy transition, it becomes imperative for the oil and gas industries to find efficient methods for hydrocarbon recovery from subsurface formations, aiming to minimize their carbon footprint. Hence, close collaboration between the university (represented by OGRINDO ITB as a research consortium) and industry players is crucial in addressing these evolving demands.
Various favorable factors influenced the decision of the petroleum study program to establish this reseach consortium. These included the potential for aligning research initiatives/ideas with industry challanges, estabilishing a good cooperation with oil and gas companies personnel, encouragement and assistance from governmental bodies such as Ditjen Migas and SKK Migas and also, the petroleum engineering department's robust research team consisting of students and recent graduates, dedicated supervisors and professors, and administrative support.
