One EOR method that is currently gaining attention is the use of <em>Low Salinity Water<\/em> (LSW) as an injection fluid. Several studies have shown that low-salinity <em>brine<\/em> is able to mobilize <em>residual oil<\/em> more effectively compared to <em>brine<\/em> with high salinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent research indicates that the effectiveness of LSW can be further enhanced through the addition of titanium dioxide (TiO\u2082) nanoparticles. Illustration of <em>crude oil\u2013brine\u2013rock<\/em> (COBR) interaction in the LSW\u2013TiO\u2082 study.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Does <em>Low Salinity Water<\/em> Become More Effective with TiO\u2082 Nanoparticle?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent laboratory studies investigated <em>crude oil\u2013brine\u2013rock<\/em> (COBR) interactions within a salinity range of 500\u201332,000 ppm and TiO\u2082 concentrations of 0\u2013100 ppm using sample from Berea <em>sandstone<\/em>. The results show that the addition of TiO\u2082 into LSW induces significant physicochemical changes, particularly in pH, zeta potential, and contact angle parameters, which directly influence the mechanism of oil detachment from the rock surface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This combination produces an effective LSW\u2013TiO\u2082 nanofluid capable of altering the rock wettability toward a more <em>water-wet<\/em> (<em>wettability alteration<\/em>). Changes in <em>zeta potential<\/em> (ZP) values at various TiO\u2082 concentrations and salinity levels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Implications for EOR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Findings from this study show that the combination of LSW and TiO\u2082 nanoparticles has significant potential for optimizing the EOR process in <em>sandstone<\/em>reservoirs. Modifications of interfacial properties\u2014particularly through changes in <em>wettability<\/em>\u2014emerge as the main mechanism supporting enhanced oil mobilization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study also demonstrates that the tested TiO\u2082 concentrations provide consistent physicochemical responses, opening opportunities for designing more optimal injection fluids to maximize oil recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to offering a fundamental understanding of fluid\u2013rock interactions under low-salinity conditions, the results of this research provide new direction for developing more effective LSW\u2013TiO\u2082 nanofluid formulations for field applications.
