Barium and sulfate in <em>produced water<\/em> exhibit different effects on performance of <em>fracturing fluid<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Utilization of <em>produced water<\/em> as an alternative in <em>fracturing fluid<\/em> formulation is gaining increasing attention in the oil and gas industry, particularly amid limited freshwater availability in the field. However, the complexity of the chemical composition of <em>produced water<\/em>, especially the presence of monovalent and divalent ions, can significantly affect the rheological properties of the fluid, including viscosity, which is a key parameter in the success of <em>hydraulic fracturing<\/em>. Therefore, a deeper understanding of ion\u2013polymer interactions becomes crucial in designing <em>fracturing fluid<\/em> which is optimal and applicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study reviews the results of recent research on the effects of barium and sulfate ions on hydroxypropyl guar (HPG)-based <em>fracturing fluid<\/em> , as well as their implications for the use of <em>produced water<\/em> in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Utilization of <em>Produced Water<\/em> in <em>Fracturing Fluid<\/em>: Challenges and Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of <em>produced water<\/em> offers advantages in terms of availability and cost efficiency. However, its complex ionic composition can affect the stability and performance of <em>fracturing fluid<\/em>. Dissolved ions, both monovalent and divalent, are known to play a role in determining fluid viscosity and flow behavior, and therefore require further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research Objective: Understanding the Role of Ions in Performance <em>Fracturing Fluids<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study aims to evaluate the effect of divalent ions, particularly barium (Ba\u00b2\u207a) and sulfate (SO\u2084\u00b2\u207b), on the viscosity of  HPG-based <em>fracturing fluid <\/em>. In addition, this study also aims to understand how these ions influence the rheological behavior of the fluid under various operating conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Testing Methodology: Evaluation of HPG Fluid Rheology under Various Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The testing was conducted experimentally using HPG solutions with varying concentrations of barium and sulfate ions. The main parameter observed was fluid viscosity under different <em>shear rate<\/em> and temperature conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, the testing includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The addition of BaCl\u2082 and Na\u2082SO\u2084 ions up to a concentration of 150 ppm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viscosity measurement using a rheometer at several <em>shear rate<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluation at 25\u00b0C (surface conditions) and 70\u00b0C (reservoir conditions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysis of polymer hydration time and fluid residue testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach is used to represent actual field conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-2.png 800w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-2-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-2-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-2-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 2. The addition of 150 ppm Ba\u00b2\u207a can increase HPG viscosity by up to ~30% under low-temperature conditions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Results and Discussion: The Impact of Barium and Sulfate Ions on Viscosity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results show that the ionic content in <em>produced water<\/em> has different effects on the rheological properties of <em>fracturing fluid<\/em>:<br><strong>Barium Ion (Ba\u00b2\u207a)<\/strong><br>At a concentration of 150 ppm, barium can increase fluid viscosity by approximately 30% at 25\u00b0C. However, at 70\u00b0C, this effect becomes less significant.<br><strong>Sulfate Ion (SO\u2084\u00b2\u207b)<\/strong><br>Sulfate shows a relatively small effect on viscosity, with an increase of around 7% at low temperature, and no significant effect at higher temperatures.<br><strong>Fluid Rheological Behavior<\/strong><br>The fluid exhibits <em>shear thinning<\/em>behavior, where viscosity decreases as increasing <em>shear rate<\/em>.<br><strong>Fluid Residue<\/strong><br>The presence of barium and sulfate ions increases residue levels, but they remain within industry standard limits.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-3.png 800w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-3-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-3-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/ogrindoitb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Barium-vs-Sulfate_-Which-One-Really-Changes-Fracturing-Fluid-Performace_-3-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 3. Barium significantly increases viscosity, while sulfate has a minimal effect. However, this effect weakens as temperature increases.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion: Implications for <em>Fracturing Fluid <\/em>Design in the Field<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study shows that barium ions have a more significant effect than sulfate ions in increasing the viscosity of HPG-based <em>fracturing fluid<\/em> , particularly at low temperatures.
