However, not all injected surfactants will continue to move with the fluid phase. Some surfactants may be retained within the <em>porous media<\/em> through several mechanisms. Several mechanisms of <em>surfactant retention<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why Does <em>Surfactant Retention<\/em> Important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retained surfactants no longer move with the <em>flowing phase<\/em>. <em>Retention<\/em> higher can reduce the amount of surfactant that continues to move through the <em>porous media<\/em> and potentially increase the requirement <em>chemical<\/em> to reach the target area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, <em>retention <\/em>is one of the important aspects in evaluating chemical behavior and efficiency in <em>chemical<\/em> state in the <em>Chemical<\/em> EOR. However, <em>retention<\/em> is not the only parameter for assessing surfactant performance. Why <em>surfactant retention<\/em> is important.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How is <em>Retention<\/em> Evaluated in the Laboratory?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Retention<\/em> can be studied through both static and dynamic tests. In dynamic tests such as <em>coreflood<\/em>, surfactant is flowed through a <em>core plug<\/em>, and then <em>effluent<\/em> the effluent collected and analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simple terms, the test can be conducted through the following stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Brine saturation \u2192 Surfactant injection through the core \u2192 Post-flush \u2192 Effluent collection \u2192 Concentration analysis<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simple terms, the amount of surfactant injected is compared with the amount of surfactant recovered from the <em>effluent<\/em>. How to estimate the amount of surfactant retained in porous media using an approach of <em>material balance<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Factors Affecting <em>Retention<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extent of <em>surfactant retention<\/em> can vary in each system and is influenced by various factors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rock type and mineralogy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>surfactant type and concentration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>brine composition and salinity <em>brine<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the interactions of <em>rock\u2013surfactant\u2013brine<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, testing under conditions relevant to the reservoir system is an important part of evaluation <em>Chemical<\/em> EOR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Laboratory to EOR Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data of <em>surfactant retention<\/em> provide an overview of how surfactants are transported through<em> porous media<\/em> and can be used as one part of the <em>screening <\/em>and evaluation of <em>Chemical<\/em> EOR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its application, the data of <em>retention<\/em> do not stand alone.
