A Leader Returns: Prof. Taufan Marhaendrajana as Chairman of OGRINDO ITB

OGRINDO ITB proudly welcomes back Prof. Ir. Taufan Marhaendrajana, M.Sc., Ph.D. as Chairman of OGRINDO ITB following his national leadership role as Deputy for Exploitation at SKK Migas.

As an alumnus of Petroleum Engineering at ITB with Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, Prof. Taufan has a professional journey that spans academia, the global oil and gas industry, and national energy leadership.

From Conoco Indonesia and Schlumberger Product Center USA to various strategic positions at ITB and within Indonesia’s energy sector, his journey reflects a combination of scientific expertise, leadership, and tangible contributions to technology development and the future of Indonesia’s energy sector.

Educational and Academic Background

Prof. Taufan completed his undergraduate education in Petroleum Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). His interest in reservoir studies and petroleum engineering led him to pursue Master’s and Doctoral studies in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, United States.

This academic journey became an important foundation in building his competencies in engineering, research, and oil and gas technology development.

Career in the Global Oil and Gas Industry

Prof. Taufan’s professional career began at Conoco Indonesia during the 1991–1992 period. This experience marked the beginning of his direct involvement in the energy industry.

He later continued his international career as a Senior Engineer at Schlumberger Product Center, USA from 1999–2002. In this role, he was involved in engineering and technology development within the global oil and gas industry, while also broadening his perspective on the challenges and innovations of the global energy sector.

Contributions to Education and Research Development at ITB

Within the academic environment at ITB, Prof. Taufan is recognized for his active role in the development of petroleum engineering education and research. He previously served as Head of the Undergraduate Petroleum Engineering Program at ITB during 2008–2009, as well as Head of the Master’s and Doctoral Petroleum Engineering Programs at ITB during 2014–2017.

In addition, he was also entrusted as Head of the Drilling, Production, and Petroleum Management Research Group at ITB during 2021–2025.

His contributions have not only focused on curriculum and educational development, but also on strengthening research culture, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the application of scientific knowledge to support industrial and societal needs.

Strategic Roles at Institutional and Government Levels

Prof. Taufan’s dedication to the development of science and technology is also reflected through the various strategic positions he has held at ITB, including:

  • Head of the Undergraduate Petroleum Engineering Program at ITB (2008–2009)
  • Head of the Master’s and Doctoral Petroleum Engineering Programs at ITB (2014–2017)
  • Secretary of the ITB Professors Forum (2019–2022)
  • Director of the Institute for Science and Technology Development at ITB (2022–2024)
  • Director of Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Applications at ITB (2024–2025)

At the national level, he was also entrusted to serve as Deputy for Exploitation at SKK Migas during 2025–2026, as well as a Member of the Supervisory Board of IATMI for the 2025–2028 period.

These experiences demonstrate his active involvement in policy development, energy resource management, and strengthening synergy between academia and industry.

Meet Our Team: Wijoyo Niti Daton, S.T., M.T. — Senior Researcher at OGRINDO ITB

In addressing the increasingly complex challenges of the energy industry, OGRINDO ITB is supported by researchers with strong academic competence and relevant industry experience. One of them is Wijoyo Niti Daton, S.T., M.T., who serves as a Senior Researcher with a focus on petroleum production system and reservoir simulation.

Educational Background

Wijoyo Niti Daton, S.T., M.T. pursued his Bachelor’s degree (S.T.) in Electrical Engineering at Maranatha Christian University in 2006. He then continued his Master’s degree (M.T.) in Petroleum Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung and completed it in 2012 with a thesis titled FOI Determination using Effective Wellbore Radius.

This academic journey established a unique scientific foundation, combining electrical engineering approaches with reservoir analysis and petroleum production systems.

Career Journey and Project Experience

His career journey reflects a strong combination of academic and industry experience. He began as an Electrical Engineer (internee), then developed into a Lab Supervisor and lecturer, before entering the industry as a Wireline EngineerSince 2011, he has been actively working as a Petroleum Engineering consultant at LAPI ITB and continues contributing to academia as a lecturer at Institut Teknologi Bandung since 2015. This experience has shaped a strong perspective in bridging theory and field implementation.

In various strategic projects, Wijoyo Niti Daton has been involved in studies covering reservoir, production, and energy transition, including conceptual studies of CCS/CCUS and oil rim, evaluation of well integrity and CO₂ injection for the Abadi Field, simulation of Chemical EOR, as well as the development of smart well monitoring based on machine learning along with various GGR studies and reserve certification across multiple oil and gas fields. This involvement demonstrates the breadth of his technical exposure as well as his capability in addressing complex industry challenges.

Role at OGRINDO ITB

As a Senior Researcher at OGRINDO ITB, Wijoyo Niti Daton, S.T., M.T. plays a role in developing data-driven approaches to understand and optimize reservoir performance and production systems. With expertise in reservoir simulation and petroleum production system, he is involved in reservoir modeling and evaluation to predict field performance more accurately, while also analyzing production systems to improve well efficiency and productivity. In addition, his contributions include integrative studies that combine Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) approaches, ensuring that the solutions developed are not only technically relevant but also aligned with industry needs and the direction of sustainable energy transition.

With a combination of technical expertise, extensive project experience, and active roles in both academia and industry, Wijoyo Niti Daton, S.T., M.T. brings a comprehensive perspective to energy solution development. His presence at OGRINDO ITB strengthens the commitment to delivering research that is not only scientifically excellent but also practical and impactful for Indonesia’s energy industry.
