Meet Billal Aslam, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.: Advancing Reservoir Simulation for Better Subsurface Solutions

Technological advancements in the energy industry increasingly depend on the ability to understand reservoir behavior more accurately and efficiently. Through numerical modeling, reservoir simulation, and data-driven approaches, various field development scenarios can be evaluated to support better decision-making. This approach has become one of the primary areas of expertise of Billal Aslam, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Senior Researcher OGRINDO ITB.

Expertise in Reservoir Engineering

Billal Aslam specializes in reservoir simulation, numerical modeling, data-driven reservoir analysis, and fluid flow in porous media. His research focuses on integrating physics-based approaches with machine learning to develop faster and more efficient reservoir simulation methods, including applications for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS).

Academic Background and Professional Experience

Billal menyelesaikan pendidikan Sarjana dan Magister Teknik Perminyakan di Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), kemudian meraih gelar Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). His doctoral research focused on Hybrid Physics–Data Driven Reduced-Order Modeling for Reservoir Simulation.

His professional experience spans academia, research, and industry, including roles at KAUST, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Pertamina EP, and PT LAPI ITB. Throughout his career, he has contributed to various studies involving reservoir simulation, reservoir surveillance, Chemical EOR, reserves evaluation, and CCUS feasibility studies.

Contributions to Research and Industry Projects

In addition to his academic and industry experience, Billal has actively contributed to a wide range of research and consulting projects. His experience includes Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), reservoir simulation for Chemical EOR, as well as oil and gas reserves estimation, reserves certification, and reserves auditing.

In the field of research, Billal has authored several scientific publications in the SPE Journal and has presented his work at international Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) conferences. His research focuses on the development of deep learning, hybrid physics–data driven modelingand their applications to simulation fractured reservoirs dan CO₂ sequestration. These contributions reflect his commitment to advancing reservoir engineering solutions that address industry needs while contributing to scientific progress.

EOR Laboratory ITB in Collaboration with OGRINDO ITB Portfolio: Supporting Enhanced Oil Recovery Projects from Laboratory Evaluation to Field Implementation

The successful implementation of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is determined not only by laboratory testing results but also by the ability to translate research findings into solutions that can be effectively implemented in the field. From reservoir evaluation, laboratory testing, and conceptual design to field implementation and performance monitoring, every stage requires an integrated approach.

As part of OGRINDO ITB, EOR Laboratory ITB contributes to the advancement of Enhanced Oil Recovery technologies through research, laboratory evaluation, reservoir studies, field implementation, and project performance monitoring. Supported by OGRINDO ITB as a research consortium and collaboration platform, research outcomes are connected with industry needs to deliver practical, science-based solutions that support the development of Indonesia's oil and gas sector.

Collaboration Between EOR Laboratory ITB and OGRINDO ITB

EOR Laboratory ITB is a laboratory dedicated to the development, evaluation, and implementation of Enhanced Oil Recovery technologies for the oil and gas industry. The laboratory is part of OGRINDO ITB (Oil and Gas Recovery for Indonesia), a research consortium established by the Petroleum Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).

As a research consortium and collaboration platform, OGRINDO ITB connects academia, industry, and research partners to advance technologies in reservoir engineering, Enhanced Oil Recovery, and energy transition.
